Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray: Oheen Iram

Acharya Sir Prafulla Chandra Ray was an outstanding Bangladeshi chemist, educator, historian, industrialist, and philanthropist. He founded the first modern Indian Institute of Chemical Research (post-classical age) and is considered the father of chemical science in India. This genius was born on 2 August 1861 in the village of Jessore. Around 1895, Prafulla Chandra started working in the field of discovering nitrite chemistry and found it to be very effective. In 1896, he published an article on the production of a new stable compound: mercurous nitrite.



Sir Ray was honored by the Royal Society of Chemistry. He founded Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals, which was the first pharmaceutical company in India. He is also the writer of "A History of Hindu Chemistry" from the Earliest Times to the Middle of Sixteenth Century (1902). Sir Ray took his last breath on 16 June 1944 at the age of 82.
